Markov Chains
I’m friends with enough science and math geeks that my chains have become a running statistics joke – because of my name. (Markov Chains – and yes, distantly related, I’m told!) Joke aside, they’re also unassuming, subtle works of skill and craftspersonship. Markov Chains, as they are known, each start life as a spool of fine silver wire. That wire is then coiled, cut, fused (not soldered, fused!), shaped, and one link at a time, painstakingly woven together in varying patterns. Sometimes mistaken for viking weave, and often confused with chainmaille, the technique dates back to Ancient Rome, and the chains that were created in the same fashion that survive to this day. (The Etruscan Chains.) Once the links are woven, each chain is pulled through a plate with graduated holes until the chain is the correct size, and then finished with either fine silver caps and a clasp, or a clasp. (It depends on what the style calls for.)
Below are some of my favorite photos of the chains and the process of creating them. These are genuine labors of love – and considered heirloom pieces by any standards.
