The Relic Fountain Pen in Cat’s Paw Nebula

The Relic

The Relic is magic-made-science, each step creating something solid and tangible from a liquid, like magic pulled from the ether. The cap and section pattern are a Voronoi pattern, created from a mathematical equation. Chosen to stand in contrast to the organic nature of my resin casts while still feeling like a cellular matrix. The overall effect is that of a tool of power, created to channel and magnify the magic held in the brilliant, shimmering, magical material of the body. The fully lined cap with its diagonal mesh add an additional sense of fantasy and mystery.

How They Are Made

Each Relic starts as two highly detailed 3D resin prints – one for the cap, and one for the grip. Unlike 3D printers that use reels of filament, resin printing starts as a vat of liquid resin that is slowly cured one layer at a time. Each layer is less than the thickness of the average human hair, with thousands of layers needed per pen.

Once the 3D printed base forms are completed, the forms are individually prepared and suspended in an electrified acid solution and connected to one end of a calibrated and highly precise power supply. On the other end of this circuit, and also submerged in the acid solution, pure copper. With the help of the electrical current and a lot of patience, the pure copper dissolves into the acid solution, and the current carries and deposits the dissolved copper onto the 3D printed forms. It takes upwards of 24 hours to get a thick enough layer of pure copper to form without losing details.

Each of these two components are then sanded, polished, threaded, prepared for nibs, plated as needed with accents of nickel, sterling silver, or gold, oxidized for an aged look, and then spot polished by hand.

After that, the titanium body threads are individually machined in house and threaded to match both cap and section. The one-of-a-kind polyester resin, with its high shine and glass-like touch, is carefully drilled to fit the titanium core and assembled with the core, before the pen body is turned carefully by hand and then polished.

Comes with a gift box.
